PRE - PRODUCTION: Front cover analysis

The conventions for this music magazine front cover had attracted me more than any other and had also influence me on my own music magazine, for starters the colour scheme, a clear, smooth grey background with the use of black text and red embellishments to guide the viewers eyes all around the page.

The use of the massive celebrity all across the entire page of which has a direct mode of address really attracts the audience, the mean look on his face shows a sense of hip hop and that he also means business, making the readers want to look into this.

The use of huge text to promote the celebrities name, nice and creative a great technique in keeping everything busy and short for the viewer.

The masthead in red, so that the viewer immediately knows which magazine this is as it is the colour which stands out on the page.

The text is very well placed, not too much to read and has alot of brief information showing what this magazine has to offer to the reader .

This issue of enemy is another with the smooth colour of grey in the background whilst using the colour of red as an embellishment to guide the readers eyes all around the page, the girl spread across the page, draws alot of attention to her, showing that this magazine is " cool " as the girl is rebellious as she is smoking and the way she is dressed is very laid back, like an " i dont care " view.

The soft white tone to show what this magazine has for everyone to see inside and the bold masthead in the top left corner clearly showing off who they are and guiding the viewers eyes at the same time.

aswell as the previous front cover this one has a use of big text on the front, a nice creative style to promote the central celebrity on the front cover.

On this front cover of vibe like my previous covers, this one contains once again big writing, the use of big writing shows a sense of creativity and is used not the get the target audience of the magazine bored by just reading the front cover.

also the use of red as an embellishment was once again used in this front cover, it is clear that it is a great colour to guide a viewers eyes, the small sectioned information on what is in this magazine once again keeps the magazine exciting, leaving the readers to want to find out more.

the main image of the celebrity is centralized across the entire height of the page, attracting the audience to him immediately.

the celebrity being in formal wear such as the suit gives off a sense of formality and maturity in this magazine alongside the direct mode of address and smile, automatically bringing the viewers in wondering what this guy is about as this is an urban magazine

PRE-PRODUCTION: Double page spread analysis

The conventions for this cover which i liked most were the firstly the colour scheme, a rather mature and simplistic sense of colour where the black and gold blend elegantly together, the massive image on the left page draws great attention to the person who this is representing alongside the smaller image in the top right of the right page, of which blends in wonderfully with the page sending off a vibe of mystery.

The placement of the text seems greatly positioned aswell as the mixture of the white and gold used on the texts obviously used to direct your eyes across the pages, making the reader see everything that is on both pages.

I chose this magazine double page spread also because of the colours, once again simple black and white creating a relaxing setting on the eyes, the design going through the middle is a cool creative look, dividing the page, aswell the smart little slur in the top left corner relating to the central character on the page " Jay Z " also referred to as Hova, they created a smart play on words by making " Game Hova ".

The celebrity centralized massive across both pages is the most attention drawing across the whole thing letting the audience know who this is about easliy.

The simple placement of the text works well as it cooperated by working its way around the character and linking in negatively with the information box in the top right corner of the page.

The final double page spread is a one from vibe magazine focusing its way around a massive music star Bruno Mars, the massive picture takes up one side, the photo has excellent lighting with a smooth relaxing tone, the smart use of the text colour to match the photo's background is an excellent way to draw the audiences attention.

The text has a mixture of big paragraphs upon sections of information which sends off a great mix suggesting there is something for everyone to read.

PRE - PRODUCTION: Contents Page analysis

The conventions in this magazine which made this contents page most appealing in my eyes is the colour scheme, it works perfectly, nearly everything on the page is completely grey with the touch of red on the celebrity's chest, greatly drawing attention to him standing out from the rest of the page.

The feature list is well organised, nice short and sweet sections and easy to use not leaving people bored or confused when looking for what they want.

The giant V in the back symbolizes that the title of the magazine is vibe, keeping up with the theme almost like their trademark.

The positioning of the celebrity giving a direct mode of address attracts the audience to focus on them as he is drawing you to look at him and the use of a plain colour such as black to direct your eyes around the page.

This contents page from enemy  has a perfect layout which influenced my magazine greatly, the amazing use of colours such as the colour red, a great colour to stand out from the simple black and white, cleverly scattered across the page so that the reader lays their eyes on everything that is on the page.

The excellent use of page direction such as the band index on the left showing you which band will be on which page aswell as the right side which tells you general pages and where you can find general thing.

The subscription box is great, stands out from the page and is well designed, looking like it offers alot instantly making the reader want to subscribe to the magazine.

the positioning and the amount of text used for example the tiny article in massive writing grabbing the readers attention and giving a taste of whats coming and the use of the image above giving a clear example of the band in action.

This contents page from source magazine is very basic however it goes nicely together, the use of one main image right in the centre across the entire height of the page alongside the well placed text just to the left of it clearly shows that this magazine is all about the celebrities and showing that theres not too much information.

The issue number in the top right keeping everyone up to date and the simple use of black and white again, keeping it simple so its easy to get around, its easy on the eye, letting the rest of the magazine stand out in comparison to the contents page.

Music Magazine Moodboard

I chose this selection of pictures in relation to the theme of my magazine as i feel that they represent hip hop the most.

For example the cockiness and confidence in the picture of chris brown (top right corner) alongside the vintage pictures of Run DMC and LL Cool J (Bottom Right corner), the red, black and white colours on the "Hip Hop" picture share the same scheme as my magazine, representing hip hop and standing out from the other images.

School/College Magazine Collective Identity

  • Mise-En-Scene:

  • By the images and heading on the magazine cover it is obvious that this is a sports magazine, generally directed at a young male audience.
  • The image of a cut out "Football" player in action suggests a magazine filled with excitement, aswell the image being the main focus covering the majority of the right third.
  • The "snapshot" like photograph of legendary basketball player is set to draw the attention of anyone into basketball.

  • Colour:

  • The Colour of the athletes attire connects with converlines on the cover, directing the readers eyes as a point of interest so that the information gets read.
  • The colour blue, a generalised colour for boys is used to attract the attention of a young male, aswell as the outstanding colour yellow, suggesting happiness/summer, when sport is typically played or enjoyed.
  • The orange banner's, another outstanding colour to blue also suggesting happiness, are simple yet effective, as there is only a touch of the colour.

  • Font:

  • The masthead and heading are slightly immature however the masthead has an academic yet athletic appearence attracting youth and serving its purpose.
  • The coverline font is relatively mature, simple and neat, getting the point of sports information aswell as interest across.

  • Text Size:

  • The mastheads text size covers the majority of the top third, as a bold and outstanding title, showing excitement.
  • the coverlines text size is good, not too big and not too small, aswell the paragraphs length is short, not losing interest of the readers.
  • Pulling text has been emphasised to raise interest in anybody seeing this.

  • Title:

  • The title is very simple aswell very effective "College Sports" suggests everything it needs to, a sports magazine generalised around college or young people, typically males.
  • The title is very bold and immature however it looks interesting and not too serious, pulling in its targeted audience.

  • Mode Of Adress:

  • The mode of address of the centre image is indirect, showing that the image/athlete is busy or currently under pressure, engaged in the sport giving the reader a sense of excitement.
  • The smaller image of Michael Jordan is also indirect however also showing that he is otherwise occupied or uninterested in the camera.
These elements have been used to create a sense of shared experience by targeting a specific audience of college aged people, generally male as it is a sports magazine therefore so it is able to contact a shared group of people giving that group the shared experience and interest in this magazine.

Researching Magazine Mastheads

I love the design of this magazine masthead, personally being into games i believe that the design  clears expectations of a gaming magazine's masthead, it is well layed out, neat as well creative. The colour scheme is very simple yet effective and the font is perfect as a representation for a gaming magazine, a retro games font. I believe this masthead is extremely effective.

The Masthead for Thrasher magazine is relatively graffiti like, correct for a skateboard magazine as skateboarders are generalized as youth/vandals, the colour scheme is plain and calm, the effectiveness of this masthead is good, it is noticeably a skate magazine.
The Rolling Stone magazine comes across as creative, the font is well rounded and coloured, creative and mature, almost gives off a sense of " rock and roll ". Music is a creative effort so i believe that this magazine masthead is most definitely surving it's purpose as to attract musicians/musically passionate, influenced and interested people.

The Independent masthead is plain and boring, considering this magazine is for an older age group of people this would typically attract them, the font is extremely plain as well the colour scheme is basic. The design scheme is perfectly set out and there looks like there isn't alot going on, this magazine is effective for a mature audience.

Plumline Comparative Analysis

  • Key features are the success role/grades, the title "plumline",photos of the celebratory students.
  • The camera shot used for this shot is a long shot towards a diagonal angle for the photo of the school building.
The shot of the celebratory students is a MS (Mid Shot) directed towards the centre/angle.

  • The purpose of the photo was to show the emotions of the students, due to their success of the grades as well to inform others of the upcoming building, the photo's generate useful effectiveness considering they serve their purpose.
  • I personally don't believe the masthead has any link as to what this article consists of as well the appearance of it is really basic/plain.
  • The logo's i believe look misplaced however they are to show which the specialist subjects of this school are.
  • The main cover lines in the 2011 issue suggest that the quality of the education program has got better as well as the grades as it states " another record for the girls ", however it says nothing about the cultural aspect of the school.

  • The colour scheme of the 2011 issue is quite playful and colourful in comparison to the 2012 issue, the 2011 connotes that the school is to stand out, as well as this being appealing to a younger age group, highlighting individual success.
  • It is important for "Sue Flanagan, Headteacher" to be there as it is to inform everyone of her position in the school as well so that everyone knows the statement is coming  from the headteacher, coming from a higher person of the school.
  • The use of boxed text is to make it easier to read, so there's not so much information all at once making it better for younger people.

School Magazine Front Cover Initial Images

The initial idea is for an educationee to be holding a comic book/book of creativity, which shows a great contrast of this being an academic magazine of sorts, showing that it will include social interests along with educational purposes. The subject is supposed to be holding a comic book of which includes a range of social topics however i did not possess one at the time of this photo therefore i had to use my creative work.
